The first generation of American tape recorders such as the Ampex Model 100 and the Magnecord PT-6 tape recorders were based on the design of the German Magnetophon.

German tape recorders were brought back from Germany at the end of World War II by John Mullin and Col. Richard Ranger and became the basis for American-made models.
