PNW Section's October 2022 meeting was a Zoom presentation on microphone essentials based on the reality of physics. Presenter Steve Savanyu spoke from his studio in Ohio USA, giving a slide talk about how microphones work, their physical principles, and their practical usage. Some 56 attended the Zoom, with 41 being AES members.

Steve has decades in the recording business, including a stint at Audio Technica U.S. and as the recordist for U.S. Presidential debates. His breezy, well-illustrated show was meant to teach - or review - the essentials of different types of microphones, how they are constructed and operate, their characteristics, and many practical tips for best use. His similar presentations to various audio/video groups have been well received. Along with the expected explanations of dynamic, condenser and ribbon mics and their directional patterns, there were also tips like dealing with performers who cup their mics causing feedback, and making the "broadcast loop" on lapel mic cables.

A lively Q & A followed the slides, then a Meet & Greet time where everyone could introduce themselves.
