Never had one fail. 18:52:30 From Luke Pacholski : As long as ground isn't connected into the mic circuit itself somehow, phantom won't hurt ribbons at all. That's why it's called phantom. If one is miswired or somehow wired for unbalanced operation, you could have problems. Should be rare though. 18:53:02 From marcusbuick : nope 18:53:09 From Arthur Stoppe : The BK5 was the preferred kick drum mic at Sigma Sound in Philly, if you can believe that. 18:53:12 From Vaibhav Ahuja : Nope…..no signal 18:56:13 From Jess Berg : Awesome! 18:56:13 From marcusbuick : very low 18:56:15 From Sylvia Krawczyk : Wow! 18:56:16 From Dan Mortensen : Huge low end 18:56:35 From Vaibhav Ahuja : Wow! 18:56:38 From Bob Smith : would rather listen to that than the lavs 18:56:44 From Dan Mortensen : Chris is faint 18:56:48 From Lesley Fogle : What is the model of that mic? 18:57:12 From Sound Suresh : it sound great 18:57:23 From Steve Savanyu : The big issue with old ribbons and phantom power was the transformer in the mic. Some transformers had a center tap to ground (pin 1). If it was connected to an input with phantom, current would flow between ground ( via the center tap) and the signal leads (pins 2&3). Poof the ribbon went like a fuse. Modern ribbons have active circuits to allow them to match better to modern day mic pres. they require phantom for the electronics. 18:57:58 From Sound Suresh : what is the model number 18:58:04 From Dan Mortensen : Thanks, Steve, that’s really interesting and makes sense 18:58:51 From David McKenna : Quarried exclusively in France right? 18:59:15 From Steve Savanyu : I have several 44B’s and a 77B. I keep them away from p48!! 19:01:05 From Luke Pacholski : More details on ribbons and phantom power, and a possible issue with a center tapped transformer (usually also not an issue): https://www.prosoundweb.com/ask-jonah-addressing-a-long-standing-phantom-power-myth/ 19:01:22 From marcusbuick : yes 19:01:34 From marcusbuick : very AM radio sounding 19:01:39 From Jess Berg : great for harmonica for sure 19:01:49 From Jayney Wallick : Agreed 19:02:00 From Bob Smith : crystal mics were very popular with amateur radio operators. 19:02:05 From Gary Gottlieb : Sounded like a carbon mic. 19:02:09 From marcusbuick : Any special Coles Ribbons? 19:02:35 From Alex George : What is the reason that crystals don't tend to do well with low frequency reproduction? 19:03:02 From Alex George : They tend to do well with speech ... 19:03:13 From Sound Suresh : okay 19:03:45 From Rick Chinn - PNW Section - Web : crystal microphones are very high impedance, and need an active direct box or a high-impedance input to a tube amplifier to work well. they don’t need to sound like a CB microphone. 19:04:01 From marcusbuick : sounds like you need to add some! :-) 19:04:21 From Milton Foster : Any special ambisonic mics? 19:04:57 From marcusbuick : Yes, the Zylia is a higher order Ambisonic mic 19:05:13 From Alex George : Do you have any Russian mics? 19:05:21 From Bob Smith : do you have a KM54 in the collection 19:05:24 From Dan Mortensen : Could Sylvia use the RCA brick mic instead of this one? It doesn’t sound as good 19:06:43 From Luke Pacholski : Is that not a knock-off of the AKG D224? 19:06:45 From Lawrence Schwedler : The Chernobyl mic...? 19:06:46 From Dan Mortensen : Dual capsule for pattern control? 19:06:50 From Jayney Wallick : I have a dual capsule, but the capsules are next to each other, not on top of each other, for stereo. 19:07:25 From David McKenna : My guess is this is a proto shotgun, but rather than using interferon tubes to generate acoustic phased directionality, the second capsule could be used in reverse phase to create directionality 19:07:35 From Arthur Stoppe : AKG used to make some dual capsule dynamic mics,. There was a woofer and tweeter element. The D224, D202, and D200. 19:07:45 From Luke Pacholski : https://martinmitchellsmicrophones.wordpress.com/2014/05/25/akg-d224e-circa-1970-the-best-dynamic-microphone-ever-made/ 19:08:01 From Lawrence Schwedler : Dr. Strangelove's mic 19:08:24 From Dan Mortensen : Cams are backwards 19:08:49 From Greg Dixon (PNW Chair) : I think it's ML 19:08:54 From Avinash Oak : Sanken CU41 is double dia mic. 19:09:01 From Lawrence Schwedler : I love how you guys are willing to try anything! 19:09:24 From Dan Mortensen : Yes 19:10:00 From Dan Mortensen : Very dark, not much high end 19:10:01 From Lawrence Schwedler : Like the Russian winter 19:10:10 From marcusbuick : Reminiscent of a TLM193… 19:10:22 From Greg Dixon (PNW Chair) : What color is that? 19:10:28 From Greg Dixon (PNW Chair) : It looks green 19:10:37 From Greg Dixon (PNW Chair) : I have a green ML 16 19:10:42 From Dan Mortensen : This one sounds really big 19:10:44 From Arthur Stoppe : Do you have a Western Electric 630 "ball and biscuit" dynamic? 19:11:27 From Fred Domenigoni - Orcas Island, WA : What are those horn looking mics? Like the one in the background. Do any of those work? 19:12:08 From marcusbuick : yes 19:12:09 From Jess Berg : Sounds good!! 19:12:10 From Dan Mortensen : Sounds really good 19:12:12 From Lawrence Schwedler : That's great 19:12:12 From Vaibhav Ahuja : Yes 19:12:15 From David McKenna : Do you have a pin 2/3 reverse handy? Sometimes oversees mics are wired Pin 3 hot and it has a dramatic shift in sound. 19:12:19 From Giovanni Fusco : That sounds great! 19:12:36 From Dan Mortensen : Clearest and most coherent yet, maybe 19:12:53 From Arthur Stoppe : Any Altec 633 "saltshakers"? 19:13:22 From Dan Mortensen : Ball & biscuit a dynamic? Or condenser? 19:13:25 From Mike Wall : Have a lot of these old mics been modified for XLR? I'm guessing some originally had different connectors? 19:13:33 From Doug’s iPhone : 633a yes or the western electric 19:13:49 From Dan Mortensen : It is directional 19:14:09 From Dan Mortensen : No it sounds different when you talked into the back 19:14:26 From Giovanni Fusco : Directional for sure. 19:14:29 From Luke Pacholski : It's still an omni Dan. 19:14:49 From Adi Laflamme : Is there anything specific you don’t have but wish you did? And why? 19:14:52 From Dan Mortensen : How can it be omni when the HF goes away when she talks in the back? 19:14:59 From Luke Pacholski : Most/all omnis are somewhat directional especially at higher frequencies. 19:15:22 From marcusbuick : Any Altec-Lansing coke bottles? 19:15:32 From Dan Mortensen : Somewhat, yes, but that was radically different 19:16:08 From Bruno Modolo : This is a great auditory example of your historic microphones. Thank you. 19:16:30 From Luke Pacholski : That's to be expected. Still an omni though. 19:16:32 From Rick Chinn - PNW Section - Web : people in Hell want ice water! 19:16:39 From Milton Foster : With such an immense microphone collection, do you think it would be worth it to add mic modelers to the collection? Maybe not for the modeling per say, but for the flexibility of recreating the sound of multiple mics at the same point in time and space? 19:18:43 From Milton Foster : Thank you so much for that lovely response! 19:18:47 From Greg Dixon (PNW Chair) : very true with guitar modelers as well. 19:18:59 From Dan Mortensen : Sylvia, can you please talk in the back of that one? 19:19:40 From Avinash Oak : any Japanese? mic? 19:19:50 From Dan Mortensen : Omni lows & mids, directional highs 19:19:52 From Arthur Stoppe : I looked up crystal mics in the "Audio Cyclopedia" and they want to see an input impedance of like 5 megahoms, otherwise they roll off a lot below 200 Hz or so. 19:20:07 From Luke Pacholski : That's pretty standard for omni mics, Dan. 19:20:14 From Dan Mortensen : Chris’ mic is off 19:20:24 From marcusbuick : chris your lab is low 19:20:30 From marcusbuick : lav.. 19:20:42 From marcusbuick : Where’s the Dugan when you need it? 19:22:14 From Stephen DeVore : Can someone who was here at the start, Please, SAVE the Chat for later reading, somehow, before ending the session? 19:22:43 From Rod Evenson : I once worked on an Altec M11 setup for a General Radio audio analyzer that went down to ~3 Hz. 19:22:54 From Gary Louie PNW Secretary : Hi Stephen, we're recording and saving chat. 19:23:39 From Alex George : Trivia time? What is the total number of different connectors across all the mics you have? :-) 19:23:42 From Luke Pacholski : Speaking of Japanese mics, any Sony ECM-51s there? 19:23:49 From Tim Baglio : what's the smallest mic? 19:24:44 From marcusbuick : 21B 19:24:44 From Greg Dixon (PNW Chair) : Panasonic electret condenser is the smallest I've ever worked with. 19:24:55 From Avinash Oak : Yes Sony electret 19:25:31 From David McKenna : Did you ever get that WWII Tank detector mic up and working? 19:26:17 From Tim Baglio : cool! 19:26:54 From Tim Baglio : lol that's awesome 19:27:26 From Avinash Oak : Is it electret condenser? 19:27:33 From marcusbuick : your lav mics are smaller than the MG M372… 19:27:45 From Stephen DeVore : Reminds me of HAIR MICS used on stage.... 19:27:51 From Fred Domenigoni - Orcas Island, WA : We had some AKG mics like that. They worked great but were a little noisy.. 19:28:07 From Fred Domenigoni - Orcas Island, WA : Pencil shotgun 19:28:13 From Joe Carter : Can you please show us that old carbon mic in a wooden box with a carbon rod inside? 19:28:16 From Stephen DeVore : Hair mics… Not to be confused hair BANDS. 19:28:23 From Bob Smith : very small mic: sanken cos-11 19:28:46 From Tim Baglio : also for summoning shai hulud 19:29:26 From Jayney Wallick : I'll take your word on that, should I? 19:29:32 From Stephen DeVore : Weird: The video shows all the lettering backwards, like we’re looking in a mirror. How does Zoom even do that? 19:30:13 From Stephen DeVore : And we love you TOO! 19:30:13 From Lawrence Schwedler : and AES loves you guys! 19:30:13 From Bill Gibson : https://www.aes-media.org/sections/pnw/pnwrecaps/2020/aug2020/ 19:30:15 From mac perkins : what is the model number of the "tank mic"? 19:30:26 From Milton Foster : I second what Lawrence said! 19:32:29 From Alex George : How many mics do you have that are basically a speaker reversed? 19:32:52 From Lawrence Schwedler : Signal Core microphone T-21-P 19:33:24 From Rick Chinn - PNW Section - Web : Alex George: any dynamic microphone amounts to a reversed loudspeaker. 19:34:07 From Arthur Stoppe : The tank mic is the opposite of a subwoofer! 19:34:21 From Alex George : What I meant is explicitly: like the Yamaha kick drum mic 19:34:23 From Rod Evenson : PA systems in my high school were 2 way to the principals office. 19:34:39 From Alex George : I remember those! 19:35:12 From Alex George : More trivia: have you a count of the number of unique mic connectors? 19:35:39 From David McKenna : Will the Mic book be multi-media so we can hear them as well? 19:35:47 From Greg Dixon (PNW Chair) : Do you find it helpful to connect vintage mics to vintage mic inputs instead of modern preamps? 19:35:47 From marcusbuick : Any old P3 connectors? 19:35:56 From Alex George : The "Coke bottle" was weird, right? 19:36:35 From David McKenna : Same connector as a Leslie cabinet 19:36:41 From Bob Cavanaugh : Tube socket??? 19:36:42 From Rick Chinn - PNW Section - Web : connector looks like a tube base 19:37:01 From Dan Mortensen : Is that a waterproof connector? 19:37:09 From Mike Wall : Awesome. Thanks for the close up. 19:38:18 From Stephen DeVore : There was a "book" called, I think, "Vintage Microphones" – which I think was like photocopies vs. a professionally-printed book – and I decided to buy a copy of it. The collection of vintage mics among the materials seemed impressive. 19:38:52 From Greg Dixon (PNW Chair) : awesome! 19:38:52 From Stephen DeVore : I may still have it. 19:39:40 From marcusbuick : any Realistic mics in your collection? 19:39:48 From Avinash Oak : What mics of today you will choose to be in future vintage collection? 19:40:13 From Archit Vashisth : that's a good question 19:40:20 From Arthur Stoppe : Include a CD with the book! 19:40:33 From Alex George : Avinash: definitely the Yamaha kick drum mic! 19:41:23 From Gary Louie PNW Secretary : https://shop.sylviamassy.com/product-tag/oddio-shop/ 19:43:01 From marcusbuick : Thanks! That’s where I started! 19:45:16 From marcusbuick : SM57 are the Presidential mics 19:45:41 From marcusbuick : I love this SO much!! 19:45:44 From Christina Milinusic : Does a double ribbon have a ‘four leaf clover' pickup pattern? 19:46:39 From Christina Milinusic : wow. 19:47:26 From Dan Mortensen : Didn’t the plasma make noise? 19:47:59 From Greg Dixon (PNW Chair) : Christina it depends on if its stereo or mono ribbon. A stereo ribbon is often with the two ribbons at 90 degrees to create a Blumlein which is like your four leaf clover 19:48:01 From Vaibhav Ahuja : That’s what I was thinking 19:48:21 From Christina Milinusic : Thank you greg! 19:48:29 From Archit Vashisth : woah that's so cool 19:48:39 From Greg Dixon (PNW Chair) : A mono ribbon can use two ribbons I think to create a directional pattern 19:48:48 From Christina Milinusic : Cool 19:48:54 From marcusbuick : dual figure 8’s? 19:49:11 From marcusbuick : its was awesome!! 19:49:13 From David McKenna : Freakin’ amazing! 19:49:15 From Dan Mortensen : Bravo!!!! 19:49:21 From Dan Mortensen : Ole!!!! 19:49:24 From Mike Wall : Thank you! 19:49:29 From Vaibhav Ahuja : It was incredible!! 19:49:33 From Steve Wilkins : Fantastic and many thanks! 19:49:36 From Jayney Wallick : What a wonderful presentation! 19:49:41 From Rod Evenson : Electro Voice made a Tweeter called "Ionovac" with similar electrode to the plasma mike. 19:49:41 From Tim Baglio : Thank you!! 19:49:44 From Lesley Fogle : This has been such a treat.
