Approximately 60 persons met at Glenn Sound Studios, Seattle WA for the PNW Section's May 2006 meeting on digital archiving issues with John Spencer of BMS/Chace. The meeting was held in conjunction with a national conference of the ARSC (Association for Recorded Sound Collections) being held in Seattle.

Prior to founding Bridge Media Solutions Inc. (now BMS/Chace), Mr. Spencer was Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Otari Corp. During his tenure at Otari Corp. his responsibilities included working with data storage tape vendors during the genesis of the Linear Tape Open (LTO) specification. Over the last 4 years, BMS/Chace has become the leading US provider of outsourced verification and migration services for commercial record labels. BMS/Chace also provides consulting, digital migration projects, and workflow optimization for institutional archives. Mr. Spencer continues to work with various organizations around the world to help create a unified environment for the collection and dissemination of metadata associated with digital preservation.

Mr. Spencer focused on a document developed by the Producer's and Engineer's Wing of the Recording Academy, "Recommendation for Delivery of Recorded Music Projects." (see link above)

This document not only recommends practices for delivery of commercial product, but archival issues as well. The document has been presented to the AES at the Studio Practices and Production Tech Committee meeting on October 7th, 2002 in Los Angeles, and on March 24th in Amsterdam. Besides information on delivering recordings in various formats for immediate use, BWF files (broadcast wav) on AIT (Sony's Advanced Intelligent Tape), LTO (see above) and DLT/SDLT (Quantum's (Super) Digital Linear Tape) computer tape are recommended for "long-term" backup at this time. However, from an archival (very long term storage) standpoint, media longevity (especially on hard disk drives) is not the only thing and obsolescence of media readers, writers, drivers, proprietary formats & software is a big issue.

The "Sharpie" issue was revisited - whether or not to use ordinary indelible markers on recordable optical discs. It was advised not to do it, as the long-term effect of the ink/carrier on disc coatings is unknown.

The Section also presented a slate of candidates for 2006-7 officers and committee, with voting to be conducted at the June 2006 meeting.

PNW Election Slate:

  • Chair: Dan Mortensen
  • Vice Chair: Steve Turnidge
  • Secretary: Gary Louie
  • Treasurer: David Franzwa

Committee: (The candidates are presented in alphabetical order.):

  • James D. (JJ) Johnston
  • Jake Perrine
  • Dr. Melissa Rice PhD.
  • Mark Rogers
  • Dave Tosti-Lane
