AES PNW Section Meeting Report
Meyer Sound Laboratories SIM
with Bob McCarthy
Director of SIM Engineering
Meyer Sound Laboratories

The Pacific Northwest Section spared no expense for its June meeting to bring Bob McCarthy, Director of SIM Engineering at Meyer Sound Laboratories to Seattle and explain Meyer SIM (source independent measurement) to over 25 members and guests.

Wiring and equipment set-up went on til the last minute in order to install a working demonstration set-up in the Jack Straw Productions studios. The big studio was the meeting room as usual, with several SVGA computer monitors set up around the room. The Jack Straw Archive down the hallway was commandeered as the "remote test room", with an amplifier, speaker and measurement microphones. This way, real measurements could be made during the lecture without disrupting the meeting itself.

Mr. McCarthy had his SIM hardware all set up in the meeting room, and went through his presentation with overhead transparencies and computer demonstrations. He explained the concept and advantages of the source independent measurement, which allows analysis during an ongoing performance. Comparisons to other analysis techniques, such as real-time analyzers and standard FFT analyzers, TEF, and others were made. The system is relatively expensive, hence, there are not too many such systems available. Computer demonstrations continued late into the evening.

Special thanks to PNW Committee member Dan Mortensen for making arrangements and providing extensive hardware support.
